Tooth extraction is recommended in cases where:
We understand that having a tooth removed can be an upsetting and anxious time, which is why we will do everything possible to make it as comfortable and simple for you as possible. If you are feeling particularly nervous, your dentist will be happy to discuss all the options available to you. You may choose to have your treatment performed under sedation or to use one of the other options available to our nervous patients.
Tooth extractions at Denchic Dental Spa are carried out under local anaesthetic to make them as painless as possible. We use a gentle extraction technique to preserve as much jawbone as possible. This is important as this will ensure minimal postoperative pain and swelling, as well as assist in future implant treatment.
Following the extraction, you will be provided with gauze to bite on. Maintain firm pressure on this and bite for 30 minutes after you leave the surgery.
Take rest for the remainder of the day. Keep your head up to avoid any bleeding.
Careful aftercare is required following tooth extraction, to speed healing as well as reduce the risks of infection.
During the first For the first 24 hours, try to avoid hot food and drinks, do not smoke, do not drink any alcohol and try not to disturb any blood clot which might have formed
If you do rest, try to keep your head higher for the first night using an extra pillow if possible. It is also a good idea to use an old pillowcase, or put a towel on the pillow, in case you bleed a little.
Do not rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours after extraction. Once the first 24 hours pass, gently rinse with salty warm water (half a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of water). Brush your teeth as normal to keep the mouth clean.
It is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort in the first few days. You can treat this with ordinary painkillers. Always follow the manufacturers instructions and if in doubt contact your doctor.
If you feel pain a few days after the tooth has been removed, it might be where the blood clot has broken down leaving an empty hole in the gum. This is called a ‘dry socket’ and will need to be looked at by us. If you arrange an appointment to see us we will pack the wound to ease your discomfort.
Do remember that there may be some slight bleeding for the first day or so. Many people are concerned about the amount of bleeding. This is due to the fact that a small amount of blood is mixed with a larger amount of saliva, which looks more dramatic than it is.
If you do notice bleeding, do not rinse out, but apply pressure to the socket. Bite firmly on a folded piece of clean cotton material such as a handkerchief for at least 15 minutes. Make sure this is placed directly over the extraction site and that the pad is replaced if necessary. If the bleeding has not stopped after an hour or two, contact your dentist.
