We know that having gaps in your teeth can make you want to hide your smile.

If you have one or two missing teeth, a dental bridge can be used to fill the gap between missing teeth, restoring and improving your smile.

There are two types of dental bridge: a conventional bridge and a bonded bridge.

Conventional bridges 

Conventional bridges use crowns fitted to two or more adjacent teeth with porcelain false teeth created to fill the gap. If teeth next to the gap need a crown, for example if they are cracked or have large fillings, this technique works well.

Bonded bridge

Bonded bridges are made of two parts – a false porcelain tooth and a wing, which is attached using cement to the tooth next to the gap. If the surrounding teeth are strong this is a good option, as it does not require the fitting of crowns.

What’s involved?

It will take at least three visits to have your permanent bridge fitted because each bridge is bespoke for each patient. At your first appointment the supporting teeth will be prepared either for crowns or for wings in the case of bonded bridges. Impressions are taken of your teeth and an accurate measure of your bite is made. These impressions will be sent to the laboratory where your bridge and crowns/wings will be created. Your dentist will fit you with a temporary bridge until the permanent one is ready.

Once your bridge is ready you will have your second appointment and the temporary bridge will be replaced with the permanent one. Your dentist will check and adjust it as necessary to ensure it fits properly. Your third and any subsequent appointments will be to further check fitting before the bridge is cemented into place.

In the unlikely scenario that your bridge falls out, you should contact the practice immediately as in most cases the bridge can be fixed back into place.
