What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a weakened tooth to strengthen it, to restore its size and shape and improve its function, as well as improving how your mouth looks. They are also used to complete dental implants.

Do I need a crown?

If your dentist recommends a crown, it can be for a variety of reasons including:

• To restore a broken or worn down tooth
• To protect a weakened tooth or hold together a cracked tooth
• To cover a dental implant
• To cover misshapen or severely discoloured teeth when other colour restoration treatment is not an option
• To hold a dental bridge in place
• To support and strengthen teeth with large fillings

What happens if I need a crown?

There are different types of crown available and your dentist will discuss the best option for you. Porcelain crowns are the most natural looking and are strong – there are different options for strength and appearance, which your dentist will advise you of. These crowns are good for front teeth.

Porcelain bonded crowns comprise porcelain attached to a metal base and are very strong. They can be used for front or back teeth. Gold crowns are the strongest form of crown and are only used for back teeth.

When your dentist recommends a crown, they will need to reshape your teeth to hold the crown. Once the tooth has been prepared, the dentist will create and impression to be sent to the laboratory and will place a temporary crown. It can take a couple of weeks for the permanent crown to be made; after it’s ready your dentist will fit it using cement.
