A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth to enhance its appearance. With minimal tooth adjustment, this treatment is extremely versatile.
Veneers provide a great solution to chipped, or misaligned front teeth. They can also be used to close small gaps in teeth where orthodontic treatment is not suitable, and if one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others. For a single stained tooth, a precise shade of porcelain can be matched in order to deliver a lighter appearance.
Given veneers are so thin and held in place by a strong bond, the end result is extremely life-like, natural and healthy. Added to this, very little tooth enamel is removed in the process of treatment. You can have a simple one-tooth veneer treatment, or a whole set, where Denchic Dental Spa will provide you with a complete smile makeover.
The lifespan of veneers is a few years. Your dentist can advise more accurately in your case. However given they are so life like and similar to real teeth, they can chip or break. Minor chips in veneers can be repaired and replacement veneers can also be made if required. Your dentist can tell you more about the lifespan of your veneers.
Some of the outer enamel surface of the tooth may be removed, to ensure sure the veneer can be bonded permanently. To ensure the tooth stays the same size, the amount of enamel removed is minimal and will be the same as the thickness of the veneer to be fitted. In some cases we may use a local anaesthetic (injection) to eliminate any discomfort, but quite often this is not necessary. Once the tooth has been prepared, the dentist will take an ‘impression’ (mould). A dental technician will use this mould to create the veneer according to the specifications we provide, ensuring that we get a precise size and fit. Using a shade guide, we will make sure the colour of the veneer is a good match with the surrounding teeth.
Normally 2 visits are sufficient. The first visit allows the dentist to prepare the tooth for treatment and take impressions. You will be given a temporary veneer at this stage. The second visit will involve the veneer being fit and checked for comfort and appearance.
It can take a few days for you to get used to your veneer(s). We do ask patients to pop in again for a follow up check to ensure they are comfortable
